You should be much stronger on spells eg Ruinious Sigil, almost all shield spells including ripostes, affinities, anguishes etc. If you levelled as sorcerer you'll have strong magick and poor strength - which means (normal) attacks with Ascalon is almost pointless since your innate magick will not factor in (it's a physical weapon). ![]() Find the most powerful staff you can get, dragonforge it, cast Blessed Trance and Abyssal Anguish, which stacks and your enemies will fall before your might. You might have some better success until you acquire either a Devilsbane or a Virge of Madness by buying a L2 Shooting Star from Barroch. I personally prefer using strength-only weapons as a MK. Your beautiful Ascalon is not dragonforged, meaning that the split damage it produces is not sufficient to break either damage threshold, which in BBI is very high. Using Acuity and Attunement will boost your magick (personal and weapon) by 30%, while Clout and Vehemence will boost your strength (personal and weapon), separately, by 30%. Due to their great abundance, passenger pigeons are commonly assumed to have consumed seed crops in their entirety, although this assumption neglects the morphological constraint of bill gape size. The adaptive response by trees to seed predation depends on the number and size of seeds eaten. The negative impacts of consumers on their prey (e.g., reduced fitness) can lead to an evolutionary arms race of defense and resistance, whereas positive effects (e.g., dispersal) may select for mutualisms ( Ehrlich and Raven, 1964 Howe and Smallwood, 1982 Hererra, 1985 Thompson, 1994) In the case of mast bearing trees, responses to negative impacts (the destruction of seeds) include predator satiation, asynchronous masting, alteration of germination timing, changes in seed size, and chemical defenses ( Janzen, 1971 Loehle, 1987 Vander Wall, 2001). These differing ecological roles have distinct evolutionary implications for the forest ecosystem both before and after the passenger pigeon's extinction. seed dispersers (mutualists that disperse seeds) is unknown. However, the degree to which passenger pigeons functioned as seed predators (consumers that destroy seeds) vs. Historic observations and analyses of crop/gut contents indicate that passenger pigeon's dietary range included most if not all species of seed-bearing trees ( Cottam and Knappen, 1939 Schorger, 1955 Greenberg, 2014). Arguably the most significant interactions were between the pigeons and their primary prey-masting and seed bearing trees ( Webb, 1986 Ellsworth and McComb, 2003). The ways in which passenger pigeons shaped whole ecosystems and/or individual species within forest communities depend on the nature of the bird's relationships with those species. Various hypotheses have been advanced for how these megaflocks shaped the distribution and abundance of tree species ( Webb, 1986 Ellsworth and McComb, 2003) however, most of these hypotheses lack convincing evidence and long-term eco-evolutionary forces imposed by passenger pigeons lack attention almost entirely. Our results highlight the range of ecological interactions that can be lost with species' extinction and the inherent challenge of understanding the consequences of those interactions.įor tens of thousands of years prior to their extinction in the early twentieth century, passenger pigeons ( Ectopistes migratorius) were the most abundant bird species in North America, moving nomadically, consuming mast, and fruit crops throughout eastern forests in megaflocks containing tens of millions to billions of individuals ( Greenberg, 2014 Murray et al., 2017). ![]() In addition, we conclude that the digestive process invariably destroyed consumed seeds but the potential for a nutrition/dispersal mutualism might still have existed via regurgitation and post-mortem release of crop contents. Our findings suggest that the passenger pigeon's dietary range, observed historically to be taxonomically broad, was constrained to certain seed sizes due to bill gape size. Using the band-tailed pigeon ( Patagioenas fasciata) and the rock dove ( Columba livia) as physical and ecological proxies, we evaluated passenger pigeon dietary range and potential to disperse seeds. Here, we strive to better understand what was probably one of the most significant of these interactions-that between passenger pigeons and seed bearing trees. The extinction of passenger pigeons in the early twentieth century undoubtedly influenced associated species and ecosystems as interactions stemming from the pigeons disappeared suddenly. 3VCA San Francisco Veterinary Specialists, San Francisco, CA, United Statesįor tens of thousands of years, passenger pigeons ( Ectopistes migratorius) were a dominant member of eastern North American forest communities, with megaflocks comprising up to several billion individuals.2Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of California, Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz, CA, United States.1Revive & Restore, Sausalito, CA, United States. ![]() Janu21:38 EST #17 Graphic Converter and iCab are two AWESOME pieces of software.Decem15:50 EST #16 I hear great things about this site! A restaurant can see a gross profit margin of up to around 80% when selling beverages, he said - far higher than the margin for food. “The profit margin on a beverage is just humongous,” said John Gordon, founding partner of Pacific Management Consulting Group, which advises restaurants. But for restaurants, drinks - especially those kinds - are cash cows. You might think that burgers are king at McDonald’s, and drinks little more than water, sugar and flavorings. Why McDonald’s wants in on specialty coffee So to try to break into the market without messing up its regular business, McDonald’s is giving something totally new a shot. Doing that would slow down kitchens and service times, and could confuse customers. “There’s no category that has really performed better this year than specialty coffee,” said David Portalatin, senior vice president and food industry advisor at Circana, who noted that sales of specialty coffee at quick-service restaurants have risen this year compared to last.īut you can’t just plop a bunch of customizable coffee drinks onto the McDonald’s menu. McDonald’s CEO: Bigger burgers are coming If our cruises are cancelled we would be refunded, so no risk for us either. We would in fact stay on the ship in some of ports and enjoy some better weather than we would get at home. We have been told by both cruise lines we are booked on that we would be able to go ashore independently in the autumn, if the local criteria allow that, which of course means absolutely nothing unless we can use a crystal ball to find out what restrictions will be in place when we go, but like many others we have paid our balances and intend to travel even if we do need trips. I have recently been looking into Spain, as we have a couple of Med and also a Canaries cruise before Christmas, (booked to sail from the UK). The requirements for land holidays have been very different to cruises and it can be very difficult for many of us to find that criteria, though you may well manage. The right precautions are indeed the way forward, along with expectation of last-minute changes, which you are obviously aware can happen. I truly believe that we can navigate travel even now with the right precautions. On Friday, I will do my third trip to Europe during COVID. I would sincerely like to cruise this October if I can wrap my head around it. My hope is that they provide information in time to make good decisions. I am a fan of Star Clipper (and Windstar). Given that all passengers are vaccinated, and that we will likely be close to good medical care, this seems unlikely.Īs you have said, this is COVID and anything can change. If you have ever looked into travel insurance, you find that most have so many exclusions that the provide very little real coverage unless you experience something catastrophic (need to be airlifted somewhere or evacuated). While this may sound prudent, I asked if there were any requirements or minimum coverage and the answer was "no" and you just need "COVID travel insurance" and "there are many kinds". Star Clipper is the only company among the four that I have contacted that are requiring insurance. This seems inconsistent with their own policy of not permitting excursions outside of the Windstar bubble. While they are not permitting independent excursions, you can arrange for a private driver through Windstar for a half day/full day tour of the area. While CLIA is not recommending independent shore excursions, this recommendation is not being administered consistently across cruise lines. We have looked into several cruise lines. However, it seems that the few cruise lines that I prefer are setting their own agenda. If I could rely on country protocols, I would be able to better plan and choose the right option for our trip, Of course, keeping in mind that things change often in this environment. I agree that protocols differ by country and change often. I do not know of a cruise when covid insurance is not mandatory now.īecause of my profession, I follow country COVID protocols very closely, especially in Europe. We are going ahead with travel plans, hoping for the best, but prepared to take whatever the situation is at the time. There have been so many twists and turns over travel over covid times and I very doubt that will change for a while to come, especially over the winter when all infections spread more easily. There are hopes it will be possible to go ashore independently in some ports, but it will not really be known what will be the case until nearer to the saiing date and even then, there could always be a last minute changes regards that. What really matters is the requirements of CLIA, the Government of the country which a ship sails from, as well as requirements of the port of call itself and the country it is in. I think you will find all ships will be doing much the same as each other regards shore excursions once the ships sail. What are you hearing about shore excursions, masks on board, etc.? ![]() ![]() I was surprised to learn that "COVID insurance" is mandatory. ![]() Relative to the other cruise lines, Star Clipper has very little information on their website about COVID protocols and how they are adapting the experience. ![]() We are thinking that we may "jump ship." Star Clipper indicated that they are not restricting. We are currently booked on a Windstar Cruise and they are restricting disembarkation to Windstar arranged shore excursions, except in Greece. We specifically asked about independent shore excursions. Is anyone booked on one of these? It sounds like the ships are very full. We are considering one of the Royal Clipper itineraries for October 2021. |
